Budapest Nanny - Finding a Babysitter

by Barbara Petri on January 31, 2023

Barbi is our resident ‘Super Nanny’. She is here to answer all your questions about anything to do with babysitters, babysitting, babies, babies and babies!

We all get to the point when we realize we just need to get out, be it for date night or just a few hours of mommy time during the week. This means finding a person we trust enough to become a part of our, and our children’s, lives. Finding a babysitter is never easy, but being in a foreign country makes it even more daunting. So, how does one go about finding a babysitter in Budapest, or Hungary for that matter?

The best ways to start looking for a babysitter is either online or just simply asking around. On the internet you will find lots of different agencies like www.happymammy.hu, where they ask for a registration fee from the sitters and have a personal folder for each of them after a long interview. The family only pays a fee to the agency if they find the right person for their family. Another great site is www.sitters.hu, where the sitters register themselves and families can post adverts in English. If you want to use Hungarian searchwords then enter ‘gyermekfelügyelet’ or ‘bébiszitter szolgálat’. Many of the websites have English versions, you just have to click on the flag.

Word of mouth is probably the best option, especially if you’re in a foreign country. Ask other moms at the playground and at mommy-baby groups. Another great option is visiting (or calling) one of the many English-language kindergartens or schools and asking the receptionist if they have a list of recommended nannies.

A few things you should decide ahead of time to make the search easier: What type of babysitter are you looking for - someone to take on a grandmother role or a younger person, more sibling-like? How regularly do you need help - every day or just a couple times a week? Do you want them to do any housework - this should definitely be clarified up front.

Next topic will be interviews, what should you ask potential babysitters? Stay tuned…

I`ve been a nanny in Budapest working for foreign families since 2006. I have met people from many different backgrounds, babysat for kids of all ages and have experienced a lot about what it means to become part of a family, and having the patience to handle not only many different types of children, but their parents too. Since 2011 I`m a blessed mom of a precious little boy, and have come to know firsthand `the other side of the coin` (to directly translate an expression from Hungarian). Now I`m back to work part time with my son tagging along. I`m happy to answer any nanny- or baby-related questions and also helping moms in finding cleaning ladies, drivers, gardeners or any other help around the house.

How do we get in touch with Barbi for babysitting?!

We’re only in Budapest for two more weeks (holidaying) and my husband and I would love to just go out for a few hours one evening by ourselves. Maybe see a show or something!

The agencies are good for more permanent things, but we just want something once off. :)

Finding a babysitter is quite difficult for the parents who do not have enough experience in the nanny hiring process. But parents can make it easy with the help of a single online search, by searching a nanny in the local area, search engines can list out the nannies or nanny referral websites that help to easily locate the nanny in the local area. Such nanny referral websites should have all the potential nannies’ details in up to date.
