Blog Carnival for Ágnes Geréb

by Réka Morvay on October 12, 2023

Dear Birth Blogosphere!

Hungary needs your help right now. Dr Ágnes Geréb, the most prominent home birth midwife in Hungary, was arrested for attending home births the same week that Midwifery Today’s Birth as a Human Rights Issue conference was going on in Strasbourg,  France. The irony was not lost.

Here is how you (yes, YOU) can help. The Hungarian government thinks it can get away with this witch hunt because they think no one is paying attention, because they think that the people of Hungary disapprove of home birth, because they think no one in the international community will stand up and call their foul.

Blog Carnival!

Home birth where I am: an international look at the midwifery model of care

Here are some ideas to get you started, but of course anything goes!

Talk about what home birth is like where you are. Is it legal? Is it merely tolerated? Or is it incorporated into the health care system? Who attends home births? What kind of training do they receive? What kind of relationship do home birth workers where you are have with hospital birth workers?

Was it always like this? What was it like before? What changes would you like to see in the future? How did home birth / the midwifery model of care get where it is now? Who drove the change and why?

Deadline: EXTENDED! It’s still not too late!

Please send me an email at reka@budapest-moms.com with a link to your blog post! I will, to the best of my ability, TRANSLATE your entries into Hungarian and publish them on Hungarian sites for Hungarian people, doctors, mothers, policy makers to read. Let Hungary know what you think of home birth / the midwifery model of care and how it works where you are! Let them know that Dr Geréb cannot be imprisoned merely for assisting at home births, when home births in Hungary are not illegal!
